Volleyball Wraps up Season with Tri-Match Split at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – UMass Dartmouth closed the season on a high note on Saturday, clinching a 3-0 victory over Salem State after dropping the day's opener to Plymouth State in a tri-match hosted by the Panthers.

How it Happened

The Panthers dominated the first set, 25-11, to jump out to a quick lead, blasting a .367 team hitting percentage and notching 13 kills to UMass Dartmouth's four. In the second set, the Corsairs put together a solid match, narrowly falling by a 25-22 margin, before Plymouth State capped the competition with a 25-14 third set. 

Senior Kayla Kirby (Westport, Mass.) compiled five kills, while freshmen Jenna Santerre (Swansea, Mass.), Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) all notched two. On defense, freshman Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) dug a match-high 16 balls to go along with three service aces.

UMass Dartmouth 3, Salem State 0

The Corsairs rebounded in the second game for a victory, coming full-circle on the season to down Salem State for the second time since the season-opening tri-match on Sept. 3. In a 25-11 first set, The Corsairs tallied five kills on a match-high .267 hitting percentage, and added eight in the second set to edge the Vikings 25-21 before securing a 25-18 margin in the final set.

Kirby fired an additional seven kills, and Silverman secured six, while senior setter Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) finished her day with 11 assists in each match. Silverman, Spinazola and Sykora combined for 15 digs against the Vikings, while Silverman and Rittberger each slammed three service aces.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Corsairs tied a season-low against Salem State, committing just 10 attack errors on 59 attempts.
  • Spinazola finishes her career with 2,117 assists, and averaged a career-high 6.30 assists per set in 69 sets this season.
  • Plymouth State wraps up the No. 2 seed for the Little East Conference Championship, and receives a first-round bye for Tuesday's quarterfinals.
