Nine Corsairs Register Points as Ice Hockey Tames Greyhounds, 5-4

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Brendan McDonough (Wilmington, Mass.) and Steven Leonard (Rockaway, N.Y.) notched their first collegiate goals as the Corsairs held on despite a last second-goal by the hosts, taming the Greyhounds with a 5-4 win at Buffone Arena Wednesday night.

The Basics

Score: UMass Dartmouth 5, Assumption 4
Records:
UMass Dartmouth (3-2-0, 2-1-0 MASCAC) | Assumption (2-4-0, 0-0-0 NE-10)

How it Happened
McDonough broke the scoreless tie seven minutes into the opening frame, finding a hole from the bottom of the right circle, beating the Greyhound goalkeeper to the lower left corner of the cage. Jerry Laakso (Tampere, Finland) and Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) were credited with the assists.

With the score tied at 1-1, Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ont.) found Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) in the slot and scored his second goal of the season after beating the goalie to the lower left corner. Halfway through the period, Leonard corralled his own shot for the score, putting the Corsairs up 3-1.

Later in the period, the Corsairs went down two men for over a minute and a half, and Assumption's Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn.) scored in the midst of a scrum to cut the UMass Dartmouth lead in half. Seconds later, Picard collected his second goal, erasing the visitors' advantage.

Again, the Corsairs would surge back to pick up another two-goal lead that would hold. Sones picked up his Division III-leading fifth power play goal of the season on a one-timer from the left circle. UMass Dartmouth extended the lead to 5-3 when Berkley's shot hit the Assumption goalie's shoulder and trickled in, with Mason Nichols (Oviedo, Fla.) and goalkeeper Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) picking up the apples on the goal.

Inside the Numbers

  • With an assist on Berkley's goal in the third period, Michals is the first Corsair goalkeeper to tally a point since Ryan Williams posted an assist on Nov. 12, 2012 in a 5-4 loss to UMass Boston.
  • Michals made 38 saves on the night for the Corsairs.
  •  Sophomore Brian Nazzaro (Braintree, Mass.) stopped 36 of the 41 shots on net for the Greyhounds.
  • Assumption held the slight advantage over UMass Dartmouth in shots (42-41), and controlled the advantage in the face-off circle winning 39 out of 68 draws.
  • The Corsair offense has been rolling as of late, scoring in eight-straight periods in regulation. The last time they were shutout in a stanza was in the first period against Plymouth State last week.
