Montclair State Walks Off Against Baseball

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Montclair State junior Ryan Thieme (Dumont, N.J.) knocked a single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Red Hawks a walk-off 3-2 victory Sunday against UMass Dartmouth baseball at Chain O'Lakes Stadium.

Corsair freshman DeVon King (Carver, Mass.) and junior Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, R.I.) each generated a hit and RBI in the loss. On the mound, junior Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt.) tossed six innings as the starter, scattering eight hits with two earned runs and five K's. The Corsairs drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Red Hawks finishing up their Florida trip going 5-6 in 11 games.

Neither team could get their offense going early on, but the Corsairs cracked the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Ervin Kantardzic (Roslindale, Mass.) connected for a single up the middle, moving to second when freshman Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.) grounded out to freshman Kyle Missry (Manasquan, N.J.) at first base. Kantardzic then proceed to steal third, setting up to score on the single to left field by King.

The Red Hawks would answer with their own score in the fifth inning when junior Ryan Thieme (Dumont, N.J.) grounded it back to Callahan, scoring sophomore Joe Foote (Wallington, N.J.) from third.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Kevin Alonso (North Bergen, N.J.) doubled, scoring freshman Justin Epifanio (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) from second.

The Corsairs knotted the game up in the top half of the eighth inning. Sophomore Josh O'Neill (Halifax, Mass.) started the frame off with an infield single. O'Neill stole second, and then moved to third on a throwing error. After a walk and steal for freshman Ryan Ainslie (Weymouth, Mass.), Cacciola drew a walk and with the fourth ball being a wild pitch to plate O'Neill.

Thieme then took advantage of the loaded bases in the bottom of the ninth, scored the game winning hit that just squirted out of the infield, driving in Philip Scott (Paulsboro, N.J.)

Sophomore Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Corsairs, while sophomore Taylor Parsons (Livingston, N.J.) collected the win in 1.1 innings of relief for Montclair State, recording two strikeouts.

The Corsairs will be back in action when they take on Endicott College on Monday at Lake Myrtle with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
