Baseball Sails Past Rhode Island College in Seven Innings

Box Score

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth sailed to a 13-1 victory over Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College in a seven inning affair on Tuesday afternoon, as senior Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) picks up the complete game win on the mound for the hosts.

Junior Taylor Cacciola (West Greenfield, R.I.) drove in five RBIs to power the Corsairs offense. UMass Dartmouth improves to 11-15 and 3-4 in conference action, while the Anchormen fall to 11-16-2 and 1-6 in the Little East.

The Corsairs capitalized on the RIC mistakes in the bottom of the second, when they sent 13 batters to bat and eight crossed the plate. Freshman Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.) drove in the first two runs of the game on a single to left field, and advanced to second on the error by the left fielder. Ramirez scored on an error by the shortstop as he tried to turn the double play. Cacciola then lined a single to center to score two more and bring the lead to 5-0. Back-to-back singles from sophomores Jack Harrington (Barnstable, Mass.) and Jose Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) increased the hosts' lead to 8-0.

The top of the third was the lone bright spot for the Rhode Island College, when junior TJ Lynch (South Kingston, R.I.) blasted his fourth long ball of the season over the right center fence to get the Anchormen on the scoreboard.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Corsairs took back the run and tacked on another, when Cacciola laced a double to the right center gap that dropped all the way to the fence to score two Corsairs.

Three more runs would be scored in the bottom of the fifth with three consecutive doubles after a leadoff single to stretch the Corsairs advantage to 13-1.

Eight of the nine UMass Dartmouth starters collected a hit and four tallied multiple dingers on the afternoon.

Chouinard got the win and his second complete game victory of the season after dazzling the Anchormen for seven innings, scattering five hits, while striking out eight. Sophomore Daniel Greaves (Warwick, R.I.) took the loss for RIC after allowing 10 runs (four earned) on eight hits in three innings of work.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they travel to Bridgewater State to take on the Bears on Thursday, with first pitch coming at 3:30pm. Rhode Island College will be in action at the same time, hosting MASCAC opponent Framingham State.
