Baseball Can't Find Rhythm at Bridgewater State

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Corsairs couldn't tack on any more runs after getting one in the top of the first, falling to Bridgewater State 6-1 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park. UMass Dartmouth falls to 11-16 on the year, while Bridgewater State improves to 10-15.

Freshman DeVon King (Carver, Mass.) got the game started by singling through the right side. He then advanced to second on his team-leading 11th stolen base on the year. King would cross the plate when sophomore Jose Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) grounded out to the shortstop.

Bridgewater State would take the lead in the bottom half of the third inning. A single and a double to lead off the frame would tie the game at one. With two outs, junior Brandon Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to center field to score senior Ryan Feeney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to take the lead.

The Bears extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth by bringing home three more runs before the end of the inning. Sophomore Matt Cassese (Taunton, Mass.) scored on a double to left field off the bat of Travis Ritchie (Taunton, Mass.). Ritchie would cross the plate on Feeney's second double to right field. The next batter, Reed Pike (Bellingham Mass.) would single home Feeney to stretch the Bears lead to 6-1.

After the first inning, the Corsairs would put only three runners in scoring position, but could not convert for any more runs.

Freshman Drew CaraDonna (Pembroke, Mass.) got the start for the Corsairs and took the loss. He scattered 10 hits over 3.2 innings, while allowing six runs (four earned). UMass Dartmouth relievers Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.), Benjamin Lodge (Blackstone, Mass.), David Tarr (Easton, Mass.) and Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) as all four combined to pitch the remaining 4.1 innings, not allowing a hit.

Junior Thomas Protentis (Lakeville, Mass.) picked up his second win of the year for the Bears, after pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on six hits.

UMass Dartmouth will return to Little East Conference play when they travel to Fishkill, N.Y. to take on Western Connecticut for a doubleheader, with first pitch coming at noon.
