Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – The Corsairs dropped a 4-0 decision to Brandeis in a rain-shortened, seven inning game Wednesday afternoon at Stein Diamond Field. UMass Dartmouth falls to 16-19, while the Judges improve to 19-16-1.
Sophomore Josh O'Neill (Halifax, Mass.) was the lone Corsairs with multiple hits on the afternoon, going 2-for-2 at the dish. Senior Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.) and junior Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, R.I.) chipped in to the Corsair offense as they each contributed a two-bagger.
The Judges got on the board early in the first inning as Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn.) crossed the plate, before fellow senior Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif.) got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double for the third out of the inning.
Brandeis would extend the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn.) singled through the left side of the infield to score both Luke Zeccola (Garden City, N.Y.) and Healy to bring the lead to 3-0. The hosting Judges tacked on another run when Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn.) snuck a hit through the right side of the Corsairs' defense to take the 4-0 advantage.
The Corsairs threatened all day, but could not get a run home. In the top of the fifth UMass Dartmouth had second and third with two outs before the Judges got out of the jam with a ground-out to the shortstop.
Senior Steve Colella (Leominster, Mass.) took the loss for the Corsairs after throwing all seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. His counterpart, junior Liam Coughlin (Townsend, Mass.) went the distance for Brandeis, shutting out the Corsairs and giving up five hits.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they close out the regular season as they travel to Keene, N.H. for a double header with Little East Conference foe Keene State on Friday beginning at noon.
