Eastern Connecticut Halts Men's Soccer's Scoring Spree

MANSFIELD, Conn. – A late goal by the Warriors was enough to hold on, keeping the Corsair offense in check on Saturday and defeating UMass Dartmouth 1-0 to open Little East Conference action.

How it Happened

Neither team was able to find the back of the net until the 82nd minute.  Warrior junior JD Stearns (Bolton, Conn.) was able to serve the ball from beyond midfield to senior Emmanuel Caicedo (Manchester, Conn.), who headed the ball past Corsair goalkeeper Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) to capture the victory. 

The Corsairs had their share of chances on the afternoon barely missing shots and hitting the post four times on the afternoon. UMass Dartmouth gathered 14 corner kicks, including nine in the first half. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Carranza took the loss for the Corsairs, facing two shots in net and making one save.
  • Sophomore Ryan Murphy (Cromwell, Conn.) claimed the win for the Warriors, after making four saves to register his second clean sheet of the 2016 campaign.
  • This was the first outing all year that UMass Dartmouth senior captain Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) did not tally a point.
  • The Corsairs outshot Eastern Connecticut 12-9 and possessed a 14-2 advantage in corners.  
  •  The win for the Warriors snapped a two-game losing streak against UMass Dartmouth.
