How it Happened
Just eight minutes in, Salem State's Ryan Smith buried a 20-yard shot past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.), giving the home team the early lead with his first goal of the season.
The remainder of the first half saw the Corsairs force saves from Viking keeper Greg Enos, with sophomore Vander Brito (Boston, Mass.) striking in the 24th minute and senior Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) getting off two shots. Vidal's first try deflected off the post, but Enos was there to keep Salem State's advantage on the other.
At 57:45, the Vikings added another conversion, with Kelly Abreu burying a shot from 20 yards out. UMass Dartmouth finally broke through in the 78th minute, with Fabio Araujo (Brockton, Mass.) heading in a ball from Troy Martins (Attleboro, Mass.), but couldn't register the equalizer before the final buzzer.
