Box Score SALEM, Mass. -- Junior Katie Brown's (Milford, Mass.) penalty kick conversion with just over 14 minutes remaining lifted Salem State to a 1-0 non-league college women's soccer victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Brown's deciding tally came after the two teams locked in a defensive battle for most of the match, as the host Vikings (1-1) recorded three of the day's five combined shots on goal. Senior Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) made that stand up by making a pair of saves in net for Salem State, while sophomore Jaimee O'Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) also collected a pair of stops as the visiting Corsairs (2-1-1) saw their three-match unbeaten streak come to an end. The Vikings held a 5-2 overall edge in shots and took seven of the eight corner kicks on the afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Springfield in a non-league match on Tuesday evening at Cressy Field beginning at 7:00 pm, while Salem State heads to Gorham, Maine on Tuesday afternoon to take on Southern Maine in a non-league outing that begins at 4:00 pm.
