Box Score NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- Junior Nick Albano's (Beverly, Mass.) goal midway through the second period snapped a 2-2 deadlock and lifted UMass Boston to a 5-3 non-league college ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Tuesday evening at Hetland Arena.
Freshman Andy Walker (Mason, Mich.) staked the visiting Beacons (6-4-1) to a 1-0 advantage with 3:26 remaining in the opening period, but junior Eric Bolden (Oswego, Ill.) evened matters for the host Corsairs (2-8-1) 95 seconds into the middle stanza. The two teams traded goals in a 52 second span before Albano's tally gave UMass Boston the lead for good heading into the final 20 minutes of play, and senior Nolan Redler (Winchester, Mass.) extended that margin to 4-2 21 seconds into the third period. Freshman Austin Miller (Meridian, Idaho) sliced UMass Dartmouth's deficit back to one 1:24 later, but sophomore Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) provided an insurance goal for UMass Boston just 47 seconds after that tally to account for the final margin.
Redler added a second period goal and an assist to finish with three points in the triumph for the Beacons, who received three helpers from junior Zack Bross (St. Louis, Mo.) as well as two assists from senior Daniel Nachbaur (Richland, Wash.). Senior Jeffrey Skinner (Houston, Tex.) and freshman Nick Daluisio (Aston, Pa.) collected single helpers for UMass Boston, which received a 29-save performance between the pipes from senior Bailey MacBurnie (Beverly, Mass.).
Senior Cameron Mack (Long Beach, Calif.) netted the other marker of the night for the Corsairs, who received single assists off the sticks of senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), sophomore Josh Vertentes (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Michael Perrone (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.). Sophomore Chris Stangarone (White Plains, N.Y.) made a career-high 33 saves in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, as the Beacons outshot the Corsairs by a 38-32 margin in a contest that saw each team win 34 faceoffs.
UMass Dartmouth will be idle until Tuesday, January 7th when the Corsairs host Assumption in a non-league outing at Hetland Arena that faces off at 3:30 pm, while UMass Boston will be idle until Friday, January 3rd when the Beacons entertain Albertus Magnus in opening round play of the 55th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament in Boston that face off at 1:00 pm.
