Box Score

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. --  Freshman Cole Frilling (Coldwater, Ohio) came off the bench to notch a double-double effort of 27 points and 10 rebounds, as Case Western Reserve overcame a seven point deficit in the final 7:27 of action to post a 90-83 victory over UMass Dartmouth at the 2019 D3 HoopMIA Holiday Shootout Thursday evening at Barry University's Health & Sports Center.

The Corsairs (7-4) built a 49-41 advantage at the break by connecting at a 57 percent clip (20-35) from the field and receiving nine points each from sophomores Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) and Adam Seablom (Lakeville, Mass.), and after the Spartans (7-3) sliced that margin to a bucket (52-50) on Filling's lay-in 2:43 after intermission, UMass Dartmouth used an 11-4 run over a four-plus minute stretch to take a nine-point cushion (67-58) on sophomore Dhalyn Sanders-Dyer's (Worcester, Mass.) jumper with 9:43 to play.

Frilling singlehandedly erased Case Western Reserve's deficit by scoring all nine points in a 9-0 run over a 2:07 stretch that gave the Spartans the lead (73-71) with 5:20 to go, and the two teams traded advantages twice in the next three minutes before Seablom's free throw conversion with 1:47 to play forged the final tie of the night (81-81) with 1:47 remaining.  Junior Antonio Ionadi's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) three-pointer on the ensuing possession gave Case Western Reserve the lead for good, as the Spartans iced their triumph with six free throws in the final 61 seconds while closing the game on a 9-2 run.

Sophomore Robert Faller (Columbus, Ohio) added 13 points off the bench to help Case Western Reserve extend its winning streak to five straight, while senior Michael Hollis (Cleveland, Ohio) collected a double-double performance of 10 points and 16 rebounds.  Junior Michael Volkening (Marengo, Ill.) was also in double figures with 10 points on the night for the Spartans, who shot 45 percent (30-67) from the floor and held a 22-7 scoring advantage at the foul line.  Case Western Reserve maintained a 43-33 rebounding edge for the contest, including a 13-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

All five Corsair starters finished in double figures in the setback, as Azor collected 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in the setback.  Seablom added 15 points for UMass Dartmouth, while fellow sophomore Sean Leahy (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points and three boards.  Junior Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) netted 12 points and six caroms on the evening for the Corsairs, who received 10 points and four rebounds from senior Harry Alexander (Washington, D.C.) along with a combined 14 points from Sanders-Dyer and freshman Taylor Carlson (Wareham, Mass.).  UMass Dartmouth shot 49 percent (34-70) from the floor overall, including a blistering 73 percent (8-11) from behind the arc.

The Corsairs square off with Scranton in second round action of the 2019 D3 HoopMIA Holiday Shootout on Friday afternoon beginning at Noon, while Case Western Reserve will be idle until Saturday, January 4th when the Spartans travel to Albion for a non-league matchup that tips-off at 3:00 pm.
