Warriors Thwart Corsairs in LEC-Opening Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Warrior senior pitcher Jordan Muchin (West Hartford, Conn.) turned in a complete game shutout as part of Eastern Connecticut's Little East Conference-opening doubleheader sweep of UMass Dartmouth at Eastern Baseball Stadium on Sunday.

Records: UMass Dartmouth (5-9, 0-2 LEC); Eastern Connecticut (6-5, 2-0 LEC)

How it Happened

Game One: Warriors 5, Corsairs 0

  • The hosts added one to their line on a solo shot by sophomore Luke Broadhurst (Stafford, Conn.).
  • Eastern Connecticut struck for four more in the eighth, getting a three-run shot from freshman Matt Malcom (East Lyme, Conn.) ahead of another Broadhurst run-producing hit.

Game Two: Warriors 12, Corsairs 6

  • In the second inning, UMass Dartmouth avenged one of the two runs it gave up in the first by getting an RBI single from sophomore Tucker Heatherman (Webster, Mass.) that plated junior Mitch Baker (Braintree, Mass.) (2-1).
  • The Warriors would not allow a shutdown inning to take place in the home half of the frame; Eastern Connecticut posted a three spot via a Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center, Conn.) run-producing single and a pair of wild pitches each with a man on third (5-1).
  • The visitors narrowed the gap back to two on back-to-back doubles from the top of the order in juniors JR DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass.) and Nate Tellier (Attleboro, Mass.) (5-3). Moments later, the Warriors would match their opponent with two of their own another Malcom dinger (7-3).
  • Hetherman repeated his second inning success with another key hit in the sixth, this time reeling two in (7-5). The Corsairs then brought themselves back to within one an inning later as Tellier hurried home on a ball in the dirt (7-6).
  • Eastern Connecticut continued its offensive rhythm with a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh, collecting two hits, two walks, and a hit batsman along the way (11-6) to put provide all the insurance they would need.

Inside the Numbers

Game One:

  • Muchin's final line included nine innings, four hits, no runs, two walks, and 10 strikeouts. He faced 32 batters, getting nine to ground out.
  • UMass Dartmouth was limited to four hits and left five on the pond. Six batters saw the dish the minimum three times.

Game Two:

  • Hetherman's two hits and three RBI both account for new season bests. He boosted his batting average to an even .300 on the season, and added a run scored and walk to his final tally.
  • DiSarcina revises his hitting streak to 12 straight games, dating back to the first game in Florida on Mar. 8 versus DeSales.
  • Corsair third baseman Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.) has registered a hit in 11 of his last 13 contests, also dating back to the squad's first clash in The Sunshine State. The junior owns the second-best average on the team with a .358 efficiency.
  • The left side of the infield (Knell, DiSarcina) is tied for the team lead in base-knocks with 19. Senior Chris Wood (Berkley, Mass.) owns 18 for a squad-high .360 average in the batter's box.

The Warriors collected their third and fourth consecutive wins.
