Box Score SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Callum Hofford's (Woodbridge, Ont.) goal 1:21 into overtime capped a two-goal comeback that lifted Salem State to a 3-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Thursday evening at Rockett Arena.
The host Vikings (3-11-2, 3-6 MASCAC) trailed by that 2-0 margin heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation, as the visiting Corsairs (5-9-2, 4-4-1 MASCAC) received a first period tally from junior Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and a second period marker off the stick of senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) to take that advantage. Salem State got on the board with 8:49 remaining on sophomore Alex Wisnes's (Hanover, Mass.) goal, and freshman Cam Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) forced the extra session with a tally that came with 2:19 to play. UMass Dartmouth had a power play opportunity late in regulation and in the first 62 seconds of overtime, but Hofford provided the golden goal just 19 seconds after that penalty expired on feeds from senior Brandon Wolfe (Granger, Ind.) and freshman Richard Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) to give the hosts their triumph and snap their seven-game winless streak.
Wolfe finished with a pair of assists in the victory for the Vikings, who also received single helpers off the sticks of sophomores Ryan Tierney (Methuen, Mass.) and freshmen Billy McGwin (Rochester, N.Y.) & Michael Shippee (Seattle, Wash.). Leonard set up Radin's first period marker for the Corsairs before being set up by junior Eric Bolden (Oswego, Ill.) on his second period tally.
Senior Sean Cleary (Barnstable, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Salem State with a 24-save effort, while sophomore Chris Stangarone (White Plains, N.Y.) made 38 stops between the pipes for UMass Dartmouth, which saw its three-game winning streak and four-game unbeaten streak come to an end. The Vikings outshot the Corsairs by a 41-26 margin and held a 38-29 advantage at the face off dot for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Plymouth, N.H. on Saturday evening to take on Plymouth State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference clash that faces off at 6:00 pm, while Salem State heads to Framingham, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for a MASCAC matchup with Framingham State that faces off at 12:50 pm.
