Moretti Leads Women's Basketball To 72-62 Victory Over Rhode Island College

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Sophomore Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I.) scored 23 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists, as UMass Dartmouth used a closing 12-1 run to notch a 72-62 Little East Conference women's basketball victory over Rhode Island College Wednesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The host Corsairs (11-8, 6-4 LEC) trailed 36-29 at the break before scoring the first 10 points after intermission in a 1:33 span to take a 38-36 lead on sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro's (Fall River, Mass.) lay-in, and the two squads traded the advantage on four occasions before UMass Dartmouth ended the third stanza with an 11-4 run to take a 58-52 edge into the final 10 minutes of action.  The visiting Anchorwomen (16-3, 8-2 LEC) responded with seven unanswered points of their own to begin the fourth quarter and took a 59-58 cushion on a pair of free throws from senior Fataya Larry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 8:27 remaining, as Rhode Island College held a 61-60 lead with 5:11 to play before the Corsairs ended the contest with the decisive run keyed by Moretti's go-ahead three-pointer and iced by four free throws from senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.) in the final 1:46 of action.

Brown finished with a double-double effort of 14 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals in the win for UMass Dartmouth, which received 10 points and six boards from junior Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.) along with eight points each from senior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Carroll (Deep River, Conn.).  Carreiro added five caroms for the Corsairs, who shot 42 percent (26-62) from the field and used a 14-3 scoring advantage at the foul line (12 combined from Brown and Moretti) to knock the visitors out of a tie for first place in the league standings.

Sophomore Willcia McBorrough (Providence, R.I.) posted a double-double performance of 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks in the setback for the Anchorwomen, who received a double-double effort of 12 points, 10 boards and three assists from Larry along with 11 points, six caroms and four steals from freshman Antonia Corsinetti (Johnston, R.I.).  Junior Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, Mass.) added nine points for Rhode Island College, which shot 39 percent (26-66) from the floor and connected for seven treys while holding a 41-38 rebounding advantage for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth will be idle until next Wednesday, February 5th when the Corsairs entertain Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference outing at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 5:30 pm, while Rhode Island College heads to Castleton, Vt. on Saturday afternoon for a Little East clash with Castleton that tips-off at 3:00 pm.
