Women's Basketball Suffers 83-54 Little East Setback At Eastern Connecticut

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. --  Senior Mya Villard (Cromwell, Conn.) notched a double-double effort of 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead four players in double figures, as Eastern Connecticut posted an 83-54 Little East Conference women's basketball victory over UMass Dartmouth Tuesday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.

The host Warriors (9-2, 3-0 LEC) jumped out to an 18-4 first quarter advantage and extended that margin to 21 points (37-16) at the break, as the visiting Corsairs (7-6, 2-2 LEC) connected on just seven of 30 attempts from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play.  Sophomore Danielle O'Brien (Rockland, Mass.) added 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists for Eastern Connecticut, which received 15 points, five boards and four assists from senior Lizzy Cretella (Cheshire, Conn.) along with 10 points and six caroms from sophomore Anna Barry (Andover, Conn.).   The Warriors shot 44 percent (30-68) from the field overall and held a 52-37 rebounding edge while converting 20 turnovers into 19 points.

Sophomore Jessica Carroll (Deep River, Conn.) scored 12 points in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists from senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.).  Sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.) chipped in with nine points for the Corsairs, who received eight points from freshman Brianna Craig (Monroe, Conn.) along with seven points and five boards from sophomore Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I.).  The visitors shot just 27 percent (19-68) from the floor and canned six from behind the arc on the day.

UMass Dartmouth hosts UMass Boston in a Little East Conference outing on Thursday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 5:30 pm, while Eastern Connecticut travels to Keene, N.H. on Thursday evening for a Little East clash with Keene State that also tips-off at 5:30 pm.
