William Kavanaugh, who during his 17 years as the Corsairs' Head Football Coach posted an overall mark of 104-64 (.619), is the longest serving mentor in the program's history. Kavanaugh guided his squad to a pair of New England Football Conference championships, including his 2002 team which posted a perfect 11-0 record and earned UMass Dartmouth's first berth into the NCAA Division III Championships. Kavanaugh's Corsairs were also NEFC co-champions in 1994 and were selected to play in the ECAC North-West Championship game, the first post-season appearance in program history. A three-time NEFC Coach of the Year, Kavanaugh guided UMass Dartmouth to 14 winning campaigns during his tenure.
Coach Kavanaugh was inducted into the Corsair Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
