Box Score DANVERS, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team taxed the Emerson College bullpen for nine runs in the top of the eighth inning to power the Corsairs to a 12-1 victory over the Lions this afternoon in the NCAA Division III opener for both clubs at St. John's Prep.
The top of the UMass Dartmouth (1-0) order accounted for six of the visitors' 11 hits on the afternoon, paced by JR DiSarcina's (Barnstable, Mass.) 2-for-5 showing at the dish with a grand slam. Nate Tellier (Attleboro, Mass.) and Mike Knell (Barnstable, Mass.) each registered two hits and two RBI, while Mitch Baker (Braintree, Mass.) posted four RBI, including a three-run homer in the ninth.
Robbie Carrillo (Melrose, Mass.) was impressive in his first start of the campaign, scattering three hits and recording four strikeouts in four innings of work. Tucker Hetherman (Webster, Mass.) collected the victory in relief for UMass Dartmouth, allowing an earned run on four hits and registering three punchouts in four innings. Tellier didn't surrender a hit during the scoreless ninth inning.
The Corsairs offense was unable to solve Emerson pitcher Jack Fox (Los Angeles, Calif.) during his outing. Fox limited the visitors to two hits and a walk, while striking out 10. He departed with an 1-0 lead after hurling six scoreless innings.
UMass Dartmouth finally solved the Lions' pitching staff in the eighth inning, when Tellier laced a two-run double into center field to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Knell quickly extended the Corsairs advantage to 4-1 with a two-run homer. The visitors took a defensive miscue to push the lead to 5-1. DiSarcina broke open the contest with a frozen rope into the right centerfield gap for an inside the park grand slam.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 12pm on Saturday, Feb. 29, when the Corsairs square off against Becker College at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.
