Ice Hockey Blanks Westfield State To Secure Third Place In MASCAC Standings

Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Sophomore Jimmy Pelton (Syracuse, N.Y.) netted a goal and a pair of assists to back freshman Daniel Davidson's (Surrey, B.C.) third shutout of the season, as UMass Dartmouth notched a 4-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over Westfield State Tuesday evening at Amelia Park Ice Arena.

The two teams were scoreless through the first 43:14 of the contest before senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) gave the visiting Corsairs (11-11-3, 10-6-2 MASCAC) the only goal they would need on assists from junior Kai Kapossy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Pat Twombly (Hill, Mass.).  Freshman Austin Miller (Meridian, Idaho) doubled that margin just 90 seconds later on feeds from Twombly and Pelton, who then struck for the third goal of the night with 7:54 remaining.  Sophomore Derek Britner (Salem, N.H.) capped UMass Dartmouth's scoring with an empty-netter that came with 1:39 to play, and Davidson took care of the rest between the pipes for the visitors by stopping all 34 shots faced for his third clean sheet in the last three starts.

Britner, senior Sean Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and junior Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) also collected assists in the win for UMass Dartmouth, which held a 48-34 advantage in shots on goal for the contest.  Senior Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Que.) made 44 stops in the setback for the host Owls (11-9-5, 9-7-2 MASCAC), who enjoyed a 37-30 edge at the face off dot on the night.

The triumph enabled UMass Dartmouth to clinch the number three seed in the 2020 MASCAC Championships, as the Corsairs will entertain sixth-seeded Worcester State in quarterfinal round play on Saturday afternoon at Hetland Arena for a 3:00 pm faceoff.  Westfield State is seeded fourth in this year's conference tournament and will host fifth-seeded Salem State in Saturday's other quarterfinal round matchup at 5:35 pm.
