The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team plays game seven at Westfield State on Saturday. The Corsairs are coming off a 26-10 victory over Mass. Maritime, while the Owls are 0-5 on the year and last lost to Mass. Maritime, 16-8, before their bye-week.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Corsairs came away with a 26-10 win over Mass. Maritime at home last Saturday.
- The defense was stellar, holding MMA to 150 yards of total offense and only eight first downs.
- Senior Mekhi Geter led the Corsairs with six tackles , while junior Josh Lacerte finished with five tackles and two sacks and 5th-year senior Chris Gomes had five tackles and a sack.
- Sophomore Logan Chappell came away with two interceptions and sophomore Shane Meerbott had a pick as well.
- Sophomore quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos threw for 198 yards and 49-yard touchdown to freshman Antonio Brown.
- Aviles-Santos caught a TD pass as well from freshman Mike Vincent.
- Freshman QB Matt Gacioch tossed the first touchdown of his career to junior Luis Gonzalez.
- Freshman Marvens Jean went six yards to the house as well.
MASCAC STANDINGS
- At the mid-point of the season, UMass Dartmouth is currently in fifth place in the MASCAC standings.
- Bridgewater State and Framingham State are tied for first with 4-0 conference records.
- Mass. Maritime is in third place with a 2-1 record despite losing to the Corsairs, but that will most likely change after this week.
- WestConn is in fourth with a 2-2 record but hold the tie-breaker over UMassD.
SIMPLY THE BEST
- The Corsairs are lighting up the MASCAC with what has been the first ranked offense all year.
- The team ranks first in points (187), points per game (31.2), total offense (2,443), yards per game (407.2) and passing touchdowns (17).
- UMassD is also second in passing yards (1,344), rushing yards (1,099) and rushing yards per game (183.2).
- Aviles-Santos still leads the conference in passing touchdowns (13) and is third in passing yards per game (193.5).
- Gonzalez (75.5) and Jean rank (65.2) second and third in rushing yards per game.
- 5th-year senior Douglas Machado leads the league in receiving touchdowns (6) and is third in receiving yards per game (81.3).
DEFENSE STEPPING UP
- After their 3-interception performance, the Corsairs now lead the league with seven picks. Chappell ranks second with three and freshman Trell Best is tied for fourth with two INT's.
- Â Junior Josh Lacerte is tied for second in the MASCAC with four sacks, while freshman Sam Alicea has three.
- Senior JP Mason leads the Corsairs with 49 tackles.
SCOUTING WESTFIELD
- Westfield State enters Saturday with an 0-5 record.
- Quarterback Peyton Capizzi has completed 38 of 81 passes for 431 yards and has a pair of rushing touchdowns as well.
- Junior linebacker Cameron Danahy continues to lead the Owls in tackles, with 44 stops this season.
- Westfield averages 5.2 points per game and gives up 33.6.
OWLS' LAST TIME OUT
- Westfield also faced MMA in their last game, falling 16-8 to the Buccaneers.Â
- Capizzi had a solid game for the Owls with 230 yards and a touchdown passing.Â
- Freshman WR Danny Farrell caught five passes for 76 yards, and OT Thomas rushed 16 times for 57 yards.
