Laing and Wade Record Double-Doubles in Sweep Over Emmanuel

Sophomore Marley Alexander had 11 kills as well

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Devon Laing and freshman Kate Wade each recorded double-doubles in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's, 3-0, victory over Emmanuel Tuesday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.

For the Corsairs (9-9), Laing finished with a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs, while Wade registered 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Marley Alexander was also in double figures with 11 kills and freshman Zoe Dizenzo tallied 41 assists. Emmanuel (7-13) was led by seniors Anna Caristi and Caitlin Tannian with seven kills each.

Emmanuel held a slim lead through the first few points of set one (8-6). That changed when the Corsairs went on a 7-1 run with a kill and an ace from Alexander and another kill by Laing to put UMassD up, 13-10. Back-to-back kills by freshman Lauryn Latimore sparked the Corsairs to eventually take a 22-18 lead and three more kills from Alexander and sophomore Gabriella Monico gave the home team a 1-0 match advantage.

The Saints took a 7-6 lead in the second set, but a 12-4 UMass Dartmouth run highlighted by kills from Laing and a pair of aces from Alexander made it an 18-11 Corsair advantage. Latimore then recorded two more kills, and an ace from Laing finished the set to put the Corsairs up, 2-0.

With Emmanuel ahead, 10-7 in the third set, UMass Dartmouth scored the next five points with kills by Laing and sophomore Maggie Sullivan to give the Corsairs a 12-10 lead. It was back-and-forth as the score evened at 18. UMassD then rattled off a 7-2 run that was capped off with a kill from junior libero Vanessa Barreto to give the Corsairs the sweep.

UMass Dartmouth is on the road on Thursday at Wellesley at 7 p.m.
