GAME 8 VS. FITCHBURG STATE

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team is back at Cressy Field to take on Fitchburg State. The Corsairs, who are 5-2 and 3-2 in the MASCAC, look to stay in the top half of the conference standings. The Falcons are still searching for their first win of the year with an 0-7 overall record and 0-5 in the league.

LAST TIME OUT
  • UMass Dartmouth avoided an upset loss at Westfield State and used a 4th-quarter comeback to defeat the Owls, 26-16.
  • Trailing 16-6 at the end of the third quarter, UMassD scored on its very first drive of the fourth.
  • Sophomore Dante Aviles-Santos led the team 71 yards in three minutes and ran in a 13-yard score to make it a 16-12 game with 11:38 to go.
  • On the very next drive, junior Luis Gonzalez busted through for a 73-yard TD run to put the Corsairs up, 20-16, with 7:56 on the clock.
  • Aviles-Santos capped it off with a 49-yard touchdown strike to freshman Antonio Brown in the final minutes.
  • Freshman Marvens Jean also had a 31-yard receiving score in the first quarter.
  • Senior Javien Delgado led the team with 14 tackles, while freshman Sam Alicea had 11 tackles and a sack.
  • Sophomore Logan Chappell picked off two passes and 5th-year senior Chris Gomes had an INT as well.
OFFENSIVE NUMBERS
  • As we have been saying all year, the Corsairs have the most prolific offense in the MASCAC.
  • UMass Dartmouth ranks first in points (213), points per game (30.4), yards per game (412.6) and passing touchdowns (19).
  • They also lead the MASCAC with 2,888 yards of total offense.
  • Aviles-Santos leads the league with 15 touchdown passes and 18 total TD's, he is third in passing yards per game with 198.3.
  • Gonzalez is second in rushing yards per game (82.4), while freshman Marvens Jean is third (67.6). Gonzalez is fourth in rushing touchdowns (5), while jean is sixth (4).
  • 5th-year senior Douglas Machado is second in the league with six receiving touchdowns and third with 81.3 receiving yards per game.
DEFENSIVE STATS
  • UMassD leads the MASCAC with 10 interceptions. Chappell is first in the conference with five of them, while sophomore Trell Best has two.
  • The Corsairs are fourth in the league with 13 sacks. Junior Josh Lacerte is second in the MASCAC with five sacks.
  • Senior JP Mason leads the team and is fifth in the conference and leads the Corsairs with 8.1 tackles per game.
MASCAC STANDINGS
  • The Corsairs are currently in third place in the standings with a 3-2 league record.
  • Framingham State is in first place with an undefeated, 5-0, record, while Bridgewater State is in second at 4-0.
  • After UMassD is Mass. Maritime, Plymouth and Worcester State who all have a 2-2 record.
  • WestConn is in seventh at 2-3 and Westfield and Fitchburg have yet to win a game.
SCOUTING FITCHBURG
  • Fitchburg State is 0-7 on the season with MASCAC losses to Worcester State (38-35), Mass. Maritime (28-0), Bridgewater State (42-0), Framingham State (35-0) and Plymouth State (36-0).
  • The Falcons are last in the conference in virtually every offensive category.
FALCONS' LAST TIME OUT
  • Fitchburg fell to Plymouth State, 36-0, last week.
  • Plymouth scored 13 points in the first quarter, nine in the third and 14 in the fourth.
  • Offensively for the Falcons, senior Joseph Haskins finished 5-for-9 with 46 yards passing, while junior Frank Sims ran for 45 yards on 25 carries. Sophomore Matthew Aguirre hauled in one pass for 18 yards.
  • Defensively, graduate defensive back Joel Monteiro led the way with a team-leading seven tackles on five solo stops and two assisted tackles, while sophomore Logan Perez added seven total tackles on six solo tackles and on assist as well as one TFL.
CAM RODGERS TO BE HONORED AT HALFTIME
  • Junior Cam Rodgers of the track & field will be honored at halftime for his All-American season.
  • Rodgers placed third in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships last spring.
  • He was named USTFCCCA All-Region and won the Little East Conference 400-meter hurdles and high jump on his way to being tabbed the LEC Rookie of the Year.
