NEWPORT, R.I. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team fell on the road at Salve Regina, 7-2, Tuesday afternoon in Newport, R.I.
Winning their singles matches for the Corsairs (5-4) were senior
Emma Sokolovsky and sophomore
Ailey Riddick, while the Seahawks (3-4) pick up a victory in their final home match of the year.
"We continue to dig ourselves into a hole in doubles, then play much better in singles," said Head Coach
Doug Chapman. "
Ailey Riddick had a nice win in singles.
Alanna O'Connell had early leads, but she was not able to sustain it. I am so proud of
Emma Sokolovsky and how she competed at No. 2 singles and played through some difficulty."
Sokolovsky won a thriller against Salve's sophomore Alexa Stevens. After losing the first set, she battled to a 5-2 lead in the second, before Stevens won four straight games to pull ahead, 6-5. Sokolovsky then forced a tie-breaker, which she won, 7-5. The senior then won the third-set super tiebreaker, 11-9.
"It was a a fantastic match wth outstanding sportsmanship and true character from both players," remarked Chapman. "They were both brave on big points and shot making was excellent. It was a great advertisement of college tennis from both players."
Riddick also won her singles match against Salve's sophomore Graysen Scherer (6-4, 6-3).
The Corsairs are back in action at Curry at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
