DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team defeated Mass. Maritime, 26-10, Saturday afternoon on Blue & Gold Weekend. With the win, UMassD stays pefect at home with a 3-0 record at Cressy Field.
Sophomore quarterback
Dante Aviles-Santos threw for 198 yards and a touchdown to
Antonio Brown for 49 yards in the third quarter. The Corsairs improve to 4-2 and 2-2 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers fall to 3-2 and 2-1 in MASCAC play. Junior Hugh Wells registered 10 tackles, while freshman Thomas Garland finished with eight tackles and 2.5 sacks for MMA.
Senior
Mekhi Geter led the Corsairs with six tackles , while junior
Josh Lacerte finished with five tackles and two sacks and 5th-year senior
Chris Gomes had five tackles and a sack. Sophomore
Logan Chappell came away with two interceptions and sophomore
Shane Meerbott had a pick as well.
UMass Dartmouth's first score came on its second drive of the day and took 15 plays to drive 62 yards. A 14-yard pass to junior
Luis Gonzalez and an 18-yard completion to
Easten Coleman gained a chunk of yards to eventually set up the Corsairs at the 2-yard line. Freshman quarterback
Matt Gacioch then tossed his first-career touchdown pass to Gonzalez to give UMassD a 6-0 lead with 4:12 in the first.
After a Mass. Maritime field goal with 10:26 cut the lead in half, the Corsairs marched 67 yards down field to take a 12-3 advantage. A 26-yard pass to freshman
Mike Vincent, 16-yard pass to Coleman and a 13-yard completion to Gonzalez put the Corsair on the 3-yard line. Vincent then tossed a touchdown pass to Aviles-Santos on a trick play to extend the lead to 12-6 with 35 seconds left in the half.
Aviles-Santos then connected with Brown for a 49-yard touchdown pass and catch. Brown then caught the 2-point conversion to make it a 20-3 lead with 5:13 to go in the third.
Mass. Maritime's senior quarterback Curtis Cann hit sophomore Jonah Mitchell for a 33-yard TD pass to cut its deficit to 20-10 late in the third.
Freshman
Marvens Jean put the game out of reach with a 6-yard rushing score with 7:46 to go in the fourth to make it 26-10.
Next up, the Corsairs are on the road for a game against Westfield State at 2 p.m.
