Big Third Quarter Lifts Corsairs Over Regis

Senior Jordan Moretti led the team with 16 points

WESTON, Mass. - A 31-point third quarter led the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team to an 82-54 victory at Regis College Thursday afternoon.

Three Corsairs (2-0) were in double figures, led by senior Jordan Moretti's 16 points, six assists and six rebounds. 5th-year senior Lauren Empey had 12 points and seven boards off the bench, while senior Jessica Carroll finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

It was a balanced scoring attack as senior Caroline Wilson and sophomores Teja Andrews and Jemima Joseph each tallied eight points, while junior Haley Reinold and senior Shaelyn Carreiro both had seven, and 5th-year senior Meagan Donovan recorded six points. Andrews added six rebounds and five assists. The Corsairs were 30-55 from the field (54.5%) and 6-12 (50%) from beyond the arc.

Senior Arie Searcy led the Pride (0-1) with 15 points.

The first quarter was back-and-forth. Carreiro got it started with a triple 10 seconds in and the teams traded baskets from there. Moretti drove to the rim for two buckets to give UMass Dartmouth a 12-8 lead with 4:20 left in the first. A basket from Carroll and another fastbreak score by Morreti made it a 17-14 advantage at the end of one.

The Corsairs began to extend their lead in the second. Empey finished in the paint and back-to-back 3-balls from Reinold capped off an 11-1 run to give the Corsairs a 25-10 lead with 6:12 until the half. Regis cut its deficit to four points, but a jumper and free throws by Moretti, and a pair at the line from Carroll made it a 35-25 game at the break.

UMass Dartmouth put it away in the third, outscoring the Pride, 31-11, in the quarter. Wilson sunk a three and Moretti and Carroll scored down low to push the lead to 42-25 with 8:34 in the quarter. Empey then kept it going with an and-1, followed by an Andrews block, rebound and assist to Empey for a basket. Finally, Empey hit a 3-ball to make it a 30-point advantage, 66-36, heading to the fourth.

With the game well in hand, Joseph picked up all eight of her points in the fourth, Wilson knocked down another three, and Andrews hit a jumper to cap off the win.

UMass Dartmouth plays its home opener on Saturday at 6 p.m. when it hosts MIT at the Tripp Athletic Center.
