DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â Three first-half touchdowns proved to be the difference in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team's, 28-7, Senior Day victory over Plymouth State to close the regular season Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs (8-2, 5-2 MASCAC) will now await their fate for a potential New England Bowl Game that will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Panthers (5-5, 5-3 MASCAC) see their season come to a close.
Sophomore quarterback
Dante Aviles-Santos led the team in both passing and rushing. He was 14-20 with 117 yards passing and two touchdowns, while adding another score and 75 yards on the ground. Freshman
Marvens Jean was responsible for 152 yards of total offense and finished with a receiving touchdown, while junior
Luis Gonzalez registered 118 total yards with one rushing TD. 5th-year senior
Douglas Machado finished with a receiving score as well.
Senior
JP Mason led the team with 10 tackles, six of those being solo, while 5th-year senior
Chris Gomes and senior
Malik Gibson each recorded nine tackles. 5th-year senior
Marcus Elysee had eight tackles and a sack, and sophomore
Logan Chappell also brought down the quarterback.
UMass Dartmouth dominated the game from start to finish. A 13 play, 80-yard, opening drive set the tone. Gonzalez combined for 32-yards rushing in the drive and Aviles-Santos broke off 50 yards on the ground over four plays. Aviles-Santos capped it off with a 4-yard scamper for six. Aviles-Santos then completed the two-point conversion to freshman
Thomas Zednik to make it 8-0 with 8:21 in the first.
The Corsairs' defense was special throughout, forcing Plymouth to a three-and-out in its only possession of the first quarter.
Two quick touchdowns opened the second. Aviles-Santos and Gonzalez combined for 42 rushing yards in the first drive of the quarter. It was then Aviles-Santos to Machado for a 5-yard strike to extend the advantage to 14-0 with 11:18 on the clock.Â
UMass Dartmouth's defense then forced another three-and-out. Only this time the snap on the Panther punt went high and senior
Kyle Kauzens was there for the tackle for a loss of 34 yards to set up the Corsair offense on Plymouth State's 9-yard line. It took just one play for Aviles-Santos to flip the ball to Jean for a TD, to make it a 20-0 lead, at the 9:29 mark of the second.
A continued effort by the defense with sacks by Elysee and Chappell kept the Panthers off the scoreboard as neither team put up points until the fourth quarter.
On UMassD's first drive of the fourth, Gonzalez punched in a 1-yard score to make it 28-0, to complete a 60-yard drive, that was highlighted by a 45-yard pass to Gonzalez to set the team up at the one.
Plymouth State was able to find the endzone with 15 seconds remaining when senior Manny Sanchez ran one home.
