Corsairs Win LaFrance Hospitality Tournament

UMass Dartmouth beat Emerson, 73-55

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Four players scored in double figures for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team as the Corsairs (5-1) rolled Emerson College, 73-55, in the LaFrance Hospitality Tournament Championship game Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jordan Moretti, who was named the Tournament MVP, led the way with 16 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals, while senior Shaelyn Carreiro finished with 11 points. Bench scoring has been a strength all year for the Corsairs. Sophomore Teja Andrews, who earned All-Tournament Team recognition put together 16 points and four assists, and sophomore Jemima Joseph had 14 points and five boards. UMass Dartmouth forced 35 Emerson turnovers.

Senior Katie Beckmann led the Lions (2-5) with 12 points.

It was a competitive first quarter. Layups from junior Haley Reinold and Moretti had the score even at five after the first three minutes of action. The teams then traded baskets as Emerson maintained a slight lead until Andrews evened the score at 12 with 2:08 left in the first. Emerson then hit a three to give the Lions a 17-16 advantage after one.

UMass Dartmouth outscored Emerson, 24-10, in the second to pull away with the game. The last lead the Lions would have was with 4:39 on the clock. A steal by 5th-year senior Meagan Donovan led to a fastbreak layup by Joseph to give the Corsairs a 28-27 lead with 4:20 until the half. UMassD rattled off the final 12 points of the quarter with a three sprinkled in by Donovan to extend the advantage to 40-27 at halftime.

Five consecutive points by Carreiro made it a 16-point lead to open the third and defense led to offense as a trio of steals set up easy transition buckets by Donovan, Moretti and Carreiro to make it a 57-39 score after three quarters.

It was all wrapped up in the fourth as the Corsairs did not allow Emerson to get back into the game and held onto a 20-plus point lead for most of the quarter.

UMass Dartmouth is back at the Tripp Athletic Center for a Tuesday meeting with Roger Williams at 6 p.m.
