Women's Basketball Gameday #5: Castleton

The Corsair women's basketball team wraps up a two-game homestand looking for its second victory of the young season on Saturday afternoon, as UMass Dartmouth (1-3, 1-2 LEC) welcomes Castleton (0-1, 0-1 LEC) to the Tripp Athletic Center for a Little East Conference clash that tips-off at 4:00 pm EST.
 
Head Coach Matt Ducharme's squad dropped a non-league heartbreaker in its last outing on Wednesday evening, as Babson used a lay-in with 1.2 seconds remaining to eke out a 66-64 triumph over the host Corsairs.  Junior Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I./Johnston) notched a double-double effort of 16 points, 14 rebounds and five assists for UMass Dartmouth, which received eight points and nine boards from fellow junior Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) as well as eight points and five caroms each from senior Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro), junior Jessica Carroll (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) and freshman Kaylin Zalewski (Johnston, R.I./Johnston).  Junior Caroline Wilson (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) also collected eight points for the Corsairs, who saw a last second three-pointer fall off the mark as time expired.
 
Castleton opened its season on Wednesday evening with a 56-51 Little East setback to Plymouth State at Foley Gymnasium in Plymouth, N.H.  Head Coach Tim Barrett's Spartans are playing eight games in a 17-day span during the regular season.
 
UMass Dartmouth swept both meetings with Castleton during the 2019-20 season, as the Corsairs collected a 66-54 triumph on December 7, 2019 at the Tripp Athletic Center before posting a 68-54 victory last January 25^th at Glenbrook Gym in Castleton, Vt.  UMass Dartmouth has won all four matchups with the Spartans since Castleton joined the Little East in 2018.
 
Ducharme's crew will be idle for the next eight days following Saturday's contest, as the Corsairs will return to action on Sunday, February 21^st with a trip to Keene State.
