Ice Hockey Gameday #1: Southern Maine

Late February usually means the Corsair ice hockey team is preparing to make a run at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title with the post-season right around the corner.

But in the current state of world affairs, everything has been but usual, and in 2021 UMass Dartmouth finds itself preparing for a season-opening contest with Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.  Face-off in a non-league affair at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham, Maine is set for 5:00 pm EST.

Head Coach Erik Noack's squad advanced to the MASCAC championship game for the second time in three years just a little over a year ago, as the Corsairs collected 13 overall victories and finished 8-2-1 in their final 11 outings.  Senior co-captain Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) is the top returning scorer for the Corsairs after earning all-conference accolades with 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points, while fellow senior co-captain Kai Kapossy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) chipped in with nine tallies and seven helpers for 16 points.  Junior assistant captain Jimmy Pelton (Syracuse, N.Y.) added five goals and nine assists for 14 points as well last winter.

Junior Pat Twombly (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Maynard (St. John, Ind.) are the top two returning blueliners for Noack, as they combined for three goals and six assists for nine points.  UMass Dartmouth boasts one of the top goaltending tandems in the region led by sophomore Daniel Davidson (Surrey, B.C.), who set the fourth longest scoreless minutes streak in NCAA Division III history as part of five straight shutouts in the final stages of last season.  Junior Chris Stangarone (White Plains, N.Y.) posted seven wins, a 2.75 GAA, 392 saves and a .912 saves percentage for the Corsairs, who also welcome back senior Parker Butler (Summit, N.J.) after missing all of last year with an injury.

Southern Maine opened its season last Saturday afternoon with a 6-2 non-league home setback to the University of New England, as Head Coach Ed Harding's Huskies are playing four of their five scheduled contests at the USM Ice Arena.
