GORHAM, Maine — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth fell short on the road this afternoon, dropping a Little East Conference softball doubleheader at the University of Southern Maine. The Corsairs were edged in the opener 3-2 and 5-1 in the nightcap.
Southern Maine improved to 6-0 and 2-0 in the conference circuit, while UMass Dartmouth slipped to 0-4 and 0-2.

UMassD struck first thanks to an RBI double from junior
Lindsay Chubbuck (Berkley, Mass.), which brought home senior
Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) in the top of the first. Southern Maine countered with a pair of runs off a two-run home run from senior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) in the bottom of the third, giving the Huskies a 2-1 advantage.
The Corsairs weren't going down without a fight, tying the game at 2-2 when freshman
Hailey Lyons (Hayden, Idaho) crossed the plate in the top of the sixth off a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Victoria Rossetti (Valley Stream, N.Y). Lyons was put in scoring position after a pair of singles from senior
Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) and freshman
Dyonna Rodas (Branford Conn.). An RBI single from senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win for the Huskies.
Senior
Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) earned the start for the Corsairs and tossed a complete-game. She allowed three runs on nine hits, while striking out four over the course of six innings.
Game 2 | Southern Maine 5, UMass Dartmouth 1
The Corsairs once again took an early advantage over Southern Maine, when Rossetti registered an RBI single in the top of the second. Chubbuck led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Richards.
The Huskies countered quickly with back-to-back RBI singles from juniors Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine) and Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vt.). Southern Maine extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run from senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, N.Y.). The Huskies tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and the sixth to secure the conference sweep.
It was a joint effort in the circle with freshmen
Kaitlyn Shirshac (Enfield, Conn.) and
Abby Bedient (Windham, N.H) combining for five strike outs, allowing nine hits and five runs. Shirshac was charged with her second loss of the season.
