Perron Powers Corsairs To Sweep

DARTMOUTH, Mass. — Senior JR DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass.) laced an opposite field single into right in the bottom of the eighth and graduate student Robbie Carrillo (Melrose, Mass.) struck out five of the seven batters he faced as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth earned a 7-4 victory over Keene State College in a Little East Conference contest this afternoon at a windy UMassD Baseball Field.

In the nightcap, the Corsairs scored five runs in the sixth to cruise to a 12-2 win in eight innings to capture the non-conference contest.  The Owls suffered their ninth straight defeat to fall to 2-13 on the campaign.

GAME 1 | UMass Dartmouth 7, Keene State College 4

UMass Dartmouth (6-9, 4-5 LEC) pounded out a season-high 16 hits to register their second consecutive conference victory.  Sophomore DJ Perron (Swansea, Mass.) went 5-for-5 at the plate with a double and RBI, while DiSarcina produced three hits and a team-high three runs batted in.  Senior Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.) added a pair of hits, including a two-run home run in the eighth, and sophomore Andrew Bryant (Canton, Mass.) collected his first multi-hit game of the campaign.

The Corsairs scored a single run in each of their first two at-bats to jump out to an early advantage, but Keene State pushed across three runs in the third.  The hosts responded with graduate student Mitch Baker's (Braintree, Mass.) RBI single to left in the bottom of the third to even the contest at 3-all.  The Owls regained their lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but UMass Dartmouth countered with DiSarcina's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.

Bryant led off the decisive eighth inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Junior Tyler Lyons (Wallingford, Conn.) executed a sacrifice bunt to move Bryant to third to set up DiSarcina's game-winning hit.  The Corsairs tacked on insurance runs with Knell's two-run shot over the centerfield fence.  Knell's fifth round tripper of the season was a milestone as he became just the fourth Corsair to hit 30 home runs in his career and first since Brian Ronayne.

Carrillo (2-2) did not allow a hit and issued a walk in two scoreless innings of relief to earn his second consecutive victory.  Senior Zack DelVecchio (Braintree, Mass.) also hurled two innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and striking out a season-high four.

Sophomore Patrick McKeighan (Pittsford, Vt.) earned the start for Keene State and pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on 12 hits and four strikeouts.  Junior Will Dolaher (Melrose, Mass.) (0-2) suffered the set back by giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on four hits and a walk.

GAME 2 | UMass Dartmouth 12, Keene State 2

UMass Dartmouth continued its momentum with the bats into the nightcap as the Corsairs reached double digits in hits (13) to produce their second highest run total of the season.  Nine of the fourteen positional players that recorded an at-bat registered at least one hit, while four student-athletes collected multiple base knocks.  First-year Andrew Possi (Milton, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with a RBI, while senior Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.), graduate student Frank Celona (Peabody, Mass.), and Bryant each contributed two hits and a run batted in.

Keene State cracked the scoring column in the top of the first, but UMass Dartmouth quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half, capped by Bryant's run-scoring single to centerfield.  The Corsairs increased their advantage to 4-1 with single runs in the third and fifth innings, respectively.

The hosts seized control of the contest in the sixth by sending nine batters to the plate and producing five runs. Perron ignited surge with a lead-off round tripper, his second of the season.  With runners on first and second, junior Kyle Denis (Warwick, R.I.) drove in a run with a single to centerfield, while Celona followed suit RBI single to left field.  Junior Andrew Camacho (Winter Springs, Fla.) capped the scoring with a two-run single to extend the advantage to 9-1.

UMass Dartmouth demonstrated its depth on the mound by using eight different pitchers to capture the victory.  Junior Jayson Reola (New Hartford, Conn.) earned the start but didn't factor into the decision.  First-year Chase Carey (Colchester, Vt.) retired the Owls in order in the fifth to earn his first collegiate win.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 12pm on Saturday, April 24, when the Corsairs travel to UMass Boston (2-2, 2-2 LEC).
