Softball Sweeps Beacons, Extends 5 Game Win Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON, Mass.- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth won its fifth straight game as they swept University of Massachusetts Boston in today's Little East Conference double feature.

GAME 1 | UMassD 5, UMass Boston 4

The Beacons struck first, taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a triple from junior Caley Ruggerio. The Corsairs countered quickly with a triple of their own. Senior Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) ripped a triple to right field that brought freshman Dyonna Rodas (Warwick, R.I.) home.

UMass Boston took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning, but the Corsairs put their rally caps on in the top of the seventh inning. Major had her second RBI of the game, driving in junior Marisa Minore (Branford, Conn.). Senior Kylie Fletcher doubled down the right field line to bring in Rodas. Major crossed the plate when senior Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) ground out. Junior Kate Condon (Billerica, Mass.) brought in the eventual game winner in Fletcher as she reached on an error.

Richards matched her season-best eight strikeouts in her third straight win of the season.  Richards closed out the game with a bases loaded strikeout to secure the victory for Corsairs.

GAME 2 | UMassD 10, UMass Boston 4

Rodas opened up game two with a double to left field. Major followed with a single and Rodas came home as Fletcher reached first on an error. Senior Julia Sorrentino (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) drove in Major and Fletcher on an single to right. An RBI single from sophomore Lynsie Miracle (Richland, Wash.) gave the Corsairs a 4-0 lead as the top half of the first inning came to a close.

UMassD increased their lead in the top of the third, starting with a single from Richards. Freshman Hailey Lyons (Hayden, Idaho) doubled to center field and advanced Richards to third base, putting her in position to score on Sorrentino's at-bat. A single up the middle for sophomore Sky Berube (Dartmouth, Mass.) gave the Corsairs a 7-0 lead. UMassD closed out the top of the third inning with a 9-0 lead.

The Beacons add two runs in the bottom of the third inning and would add another pair in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Corsairs early offensive power. Fletcher grabbed her second RBI of the game in the top of the sixth inning to give UMassD a 10-4 advantage.

Freshman Kaitlyn Shirshac (Enfield, Conn.) earned her second victory of the season in a complete-game outing. Shirshac allowed ten hits and struck out three.

The Corsairs return to action Monday, May 3 as they host Castleton University for a set of Little East Conference matchups against the Spartans at 2:00 and 4:00. Fans can catch the action at littleeast.tv/umassd.
