HOME OPENER
UMass Dartmouth football plays its first game at Cressy Field in 672 days on Saturday when the Corsairs meet Dean College for the first-ever meeting between the programs. UMassD is coming off a 21-14, season opening, win over Husson, while the Bulldogs routed Fitchburg State, 42-6, in their first game of the year.
LAST TIME OUT
- Sophomore quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos connected with freshman wide receiver Antonio Brown for a 39-yard touchdown pass with 1:48 remaining in the game to push the Corsairs past Husson, 21-14.
- Aviles-Santos led the Corsairs with 128 yards passing and two touchdowns. Brown, and junior Diondre Ellis each had touchdown receptions.
- UMass Dartmouth's defense was especially solid, holding the Eagles to 73Â yards on the ground and no rushing touchdowns.Â
- Husson took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Tucker Buzzell ran back a 70-yard pick six.
- The Corsairs' offense then went 67 yards and capped it off with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mike Vincent to tie the game at seven.
- The Corsairs took a 13-7 advantage when Dante Aviles-Santos found Ellis in the endzone.
- Husson took back the lead Nic Visser tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Walker to make it 14-13.
- With the clock ticking down, Aviles-Santos took the Corsairs 84 yards in just over two minutes and launched a 39-yard TD pass to Antonio Brown to take the game, 21-14.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
- Aviles-Santos will run the offense on Saturday. The sophomore made the most of his opportunity at Husson with 128 passing yards and two touchdown passes.
- Freshman Antonio Brown made the game-winning catch, while freshman running back Marvens Jean ran for 42 yards on eight carries for an average of 5.3 yards per carry.
- Sophomores Logan Chappell and Jackson Wellman each recorded seven tackles, while sophomore Shane Meerbott had six.
DON'T EVEN TRY IT
- Picking up from where they left off in 2019, the Corsairs rushing defense is as strong as ever.
- UMass Dartmouth only allowed 73 yards on the ground and 2.2 yards per carry.
- Both of those marks rank second in the conference.
- Javien Delgado had three tackles for loss at Husson, while Malik Gibson and Sam Alicea each had 1.5 for loss.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Senior defensive back JP Mason was named the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first week of the season.
- Mason recorded 12 tackles, seven of those being solo, and added a pass breakup.
- Led by Mason, the 14 points allowed by the Corsairs in week one was the second lowest total by any MASCAC team.
MASCAC STATS
- Let's first take a look at the individual conference leaders for the Corsairs.
- Along with ranking fourth in tackles with 12, JP Mason is second in the MASCAC with seven total tackles.
- Fifth-year senior Douglas Machado is fourth in the league with 84 receiving yards. He did it on four catches with a long of 32 yards last Saturday.
- Junior Luis Gonzalez is fifth in the conference with 55 rushing yards.
- Aviles-Santos is tied for first in the MASCAC with two touchdown passes and is fourth with 128 passing yards.
- As a team, the Corsairs are second in the conference with 334 yards per game.
- UMassD also scored the second-most points of any team in the league with 21.
- The Corsairs lead the conference with three touchdown passes as a team and are third with 113 rushing yards.
SCOUTING DEAN
- Dean College is the reigning Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) champions. The Bulldogs were selected as the preseason favorite to go back-to-back with five first-place votes and 45 points.
- Returning to the backfield for the Bulldogs is leading rusher Michael Bethune Jr., who earned 2019 ECFC Second Team honors after posting 513 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the season. He added 18 catches for 244 yards and a score.
- The wide receiver group features several experienced returners. Errol Breaux, a 2019 ECFC First Team selection, led the pass catchers with 62 receptions, 835 yards and 14 touchdowns. Joining Breaux is 2019 ECFC Second Team honoree Quintus Reid.
- On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs feature linebacker Nicholaus Grimaldi, who earned 2019 ECFC Honorable Mention accolades. He was fourth on the team with 65 tackles and tied for the lead with a pair of forced fumbles.
DEAN'S LAST TIME OUT
- The Bulldogs gave Fitchburg State a 42-6 beat down last Saturday in their season opener.
- Quarterback David Curry threw for 372 yards and five touchdown passes.
- Errol Breaux came down with all five touchdown catches and added 247 receiving yards on eight catches for an average of 30.9 yards per catch.
- Breaux also crossed the plane on a 4-yard run to set a Dean record for most touchdowns in a game by a non-quarterback with six.
- Breaux was named to the D3 Football Team of the Week and received the prestigious Gold Helmet Award.
