Corsairs Defeated at Coast Guard

Sophomore Devon Laing led the team with nine kills

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Playing just a single match at Coast Guard on Saturday, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Bears.

Sophomore Devon Laing led the Corsairs (1-3) with nine kills, while freshman Kate Wade finished with eight digs. Freshman Monika Kristjansdottir led the team with three blocks and junior Courtney Carreiro recorded nine assists.

For Coast Guard (4-3) senior Amanda Dake led the match with 15 kills, while junior Sophia Galdamez had 11 kills. Sophomore Carmen Zipf tallied 16 digs for the Bears and senior Lauren Hatfield had 11 digs. Junior Noelle Tursky led the way with 39 assists and four blocks.

After Coast Guard took an early 7-4 lead in the first set, a kill by Marley Alexander sparked a 9-4 run that was capped off by six straight points with kills from Laing and Wade to give the Corsairs a 13-11 advantage. It was then back-and-forth as Coast Guard regained a 19-18 lead. The Bears then went on a 6-2 run to win the first, 25-20.

The second set was all Coast Guard. UMassD took a 4-2 lead after an ace from Wade and a kill by Laing. The Bears then took over, scoring 23 points, while only allowing nine from the Corsairs to take the second, 25-13, and go ahead 2-0 for the match.

With momentum on their side, the Bears built a 10-6 lead in the third set. The Corsairs closed the gap to 15-14 thanks to kills by freshman Chelsea Sanker, Alexander and Wade. Coast Guard then closed the set on a 10-4 run to take the match.

Next up, UMass Dartmouth is back home at the Tripp Athletic Center, to take on Wentworth at 7 p.m.
