NEWTON, Mass. - After UMass Dartmouth won the first set, Lasell came back to win the next three and take the match, 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 10-25).
Freshman
Kate Wade led the Corsairs (3-6) with 10 kills, while collecting six digs. Junior
Vanessa Barreto led the team with seven digs and freshman
Zoe Dizenzo notched 27 assists. For the Lasers (5-3), freshman Sabine Milton led all players with 15 kills and six aces.
The Corsairs fell behind, 9-2, in the early going of the first, but quickly turned things around to get back in the set. Kills by freshman
Monika Kristjansdottir and Baretto sparked a 9-1 run to give UMassD an 11-10 advantage. The teams then traded points and back-to-back kills by the Lasers brought the score to 21-20 with the Corsairs on top. Two kills by freshman
Lauryn Latimore and one more from sophomore
Marley Alexander gave UMassD a 25-21 first set win.
Lasell used five kills to jump ahead to a 12-6 lead to start the second set. The Lasers maintained their lead until kills by Wade and sophomore
Devon Laing cut the deficit to 21-19. That was the closest UMassD would get as Lasell won the second set, 25-21, to even the match.
With the score tied at six in the third set, Lasell strung together four consecutive points to go up, 10-6. The Corsairs then went on an 8-2 run with a kill by Alexander an an ace from Laing to go ahead, 14-12. That would be the last lead of the match for UMassD as the Lasers closed the set on a 13-7 run to take a 2-1 match lead.
Lasell went ahead, 8-3, in the fourth set and never looked back. The Lasers finished the match on a 17-7 run to take the set, 25-10, and the match, 3-1.
UMass Dartmouth plays a tri-match next at Wheaton on Saturday. The Corsairs start the day against Coast Guard at 1 p.m. and finish against the Lyons at 3 p.m.
