DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior
Marcus Azor did it again Monday afternoon with his second consecutive triple-double and third of the season. This time finishing with 23 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team defeated UMass Boston, 88-58, at the Tripp Athletic Center.
Â
It was a day to remember for more than one reason for the Corsairs (10-2, 3-1 LEC). 5th-year senior
Jarron Santos netted his 1,000th-career point on a free throw at the 13:12 mark of the first half. Santos finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists. Graduate student
Jake Ashworth picked up 17 points and five boards, while senior
Adam Seablom scored all 15 of his points in the second half, junior
Jackson Zancan had 13 points, six boards and four steals, and junior
John Martins Jr. tallied 11 points.
Â
Two players scored in double figures for the Beacons (5-8, 1-4 LEC), led by freshman Stephen DiGregorio's 15 points and eight rebounds. UMass Dartmouth held UMass Boston to 58 points, which is the second-fewest allowed this season.
Two buckets by Azor and a three by Martins Jr. put the Corsairs up 7-2 after the first four minutes. Azor scored the next two Corsair baskets to reach a quick eight points, Santos then scored points 999 and 1,000 at the line and later nailed a triple to extend the lead to 18-11 with 8:44 left in the first half.Â
UMass Boston evened the score at 21 at the 4:02 mark. That was until Zancan and Ashworth sunk back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 14-6Â run to close the first half with a 35-27 advantage.
The Beacons scored the first eight points of the second half to knot the score at 35 with 17:28 to go. The Corsairs then rattled off 12 straight points with two buckets by Zancan and a pair of 3-balls from Seablom and Ashworth, all of which were assisted by Azor. The other two points in that sequence were put in by Azor himself to make it a 47-35 lead with 14:38 to go.Â
UMass Dartmouth continued to pour it on from there. A Seablom jumper, and a pair at the line from Azor, was followed by 13 consecutive Corsair points in the paint to go ahead, 64-43, with 8:54 on the clock. The threes kept falling as Seablom, Ashworth and Martins Jr. combined for six triples in the final eight minutes as UMass Dartmouth cruised to the win.
The Corsairs are back in action at Rhode Island College on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
