PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State's leading scorer
junior Myles Abbate
netted the game-winning goal off a rebound at the 2:32 mark of overtime
, handing the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team a 3-2 loss in its first game in over two weeks.
The two goals for the Corsairs (7-6-1, 4-3-1 MASCAC) came off the sticks of 5th-year senior
Kai Kapossy and junior
Sky Silverstein for his first-career goal. Graduate student
Dillon Radin picked up two assists to stay atop the conference with 16 helpers. Junior
Michael Perrone was also credited with an assist.
The Panthers (10-4-2, 7-1-2 MASCAC) stay atop the league standings. Along with Abbate, freshman Anton Jellvik and sophomore Whim Stalberg were able to get the puck past the keeper.
Plymouth State outshot UMass Dartmouth 27 to 11 with graduate student goalkeeper
Parker Butler making 18 saves over the first 15:21 of the first period. The Panthers were able to take a 1-0 lead with 3:05 left in the first when Jellvik scored from senior Ben Chipman and freshman Ethan Stuckless.
It took until late in the second for the Corsairs to even the score. A Plymouth State player lost his footing to open space for Radin, who sent a centering pass to Kapossy, who went top shelf for the equalizer with 3:23 to go in the period. The Panthers gained back the momentum just over two minutes later to retake a 2-1 advantage heading to the third.
In desperation mode with their goalie pulled in the final minute of the game, Silverstein came through with a long goal from just inside the blue line to send the game into overtime.
The Panthers took control on their home ice in the extra frame and Abbate had two quick shots saved by Butler. Abbate's third shot came off a rebound to give Plymouth State the win.
UMass Dartmouth stays on the road for a 7:35 p.m. puck drop at Westfield State on Thursday.
