Fans Welcomed Back with Blowout Over Beacons

Senior Jordan Moretti finished with 22 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Jordan Moretti welcomed back the Tripp Athletic Center crowd with a 22-point, 11-assist, seven-rebound and three-steal performance as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth blew out UMass Boston, 87-51, Monday night.

The Corsairs (11-5, 5-2 LEC) shot 54.7 percent (35-64) from the field and sunk 10 3-pointers. Everyone on the team contributed, while 11 members of the team scored. Joining Moretti in double figures were 5th-year senior Meagan Donovan with 17 points and senior Shaelyn Carreiro with 12.

Two players scored in double figures for the Beacons (5-9, 4-4 LEC) led by sophomore Vienna Monestime. UMB's leading scorer, Meg Dixon, was limited to just seven points.

It was all Corsairs all the time as Andrews made the first basket and Moretti scored in the paint and drilled a triple, to make it a quick 7-0 lead, with 6:19 in the first. After a pair of UMass Boston threes cut its deficit to 13-6, senior Jessica Carroll knocked down a 3-ball of her own to extend the advantage to 16-6 at the 3:18 mark. Moretti then got a layup to go and Careirro took care of business at the free throw line to make it 22-10 after one.

The Beacons went on a mini-run and hit a three to bring the score to 28-18 with 6:49 in the second. That was until an and-1 by sophomore Kaylin Zalewski and a 4-point play from Moretti sparked a 12-4 spurt to bring the lead to 43-22 with 2:52 on the clock. UMB was able to slice its deficit to 16 points at the end of the quarter, but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game.

Carreiro started the third with a bucket in the paint followed by four quick Corsairs' 3-pointers by Andrews and a trio from Donovan to make it 61-32 with 5:49 on the clock. Donovan scored again and Carroll knocked down a three to cap off the 25-5 quarter and take a 70-34 advantage to the fourth.

With the game all but wrapped up, sophomore Jemima Joseph netted five points in the fourth, while classmate Jaelyn Lavigne scored four. Freshman Sydney Pavao made her first career 3-pointer as well.

UMass Dartmouth travels to face UMass Boston again at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
