Successful Season Comes to a Close in Semifinals at UMass Boston

The Corsairs tied the second-most wins in program history with 12

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team saw its season come to a close in the semifinal round of the Little East Conference (LEC) Tournament at top-seeded UMass Boston, 5-1, on Thursday.

The Corsairs finish the year tied for the second-most wins in program history with 12. It is also the most victories in a season at UMass Dartmouth for Head Coach Doug Chapman.

After quickly falling behind 2-0, juniors IsaBella Winter and Ailey Riddick kept the Corsairs within striking distance with an 8-5 win at first doubles. They won the final four games to earn their LEC-leading 14th first-doubles match of the season.

"They both stepped up when it really counted," said Chapman.

The Beacons then came out storming in the singles on four of the five courts at BC High to take the 5-1 win.

"Credit to UMass Boston," continued Chapman. "They have a lot of talent from top to bottom, which is why they won the regular season championship. In several cases we could rally with them, but they were much more aggressive putting balls away.

Winter was serving for the first set, while sophomore Claire Yang and senior Alanna O'Connell held slight leads in the second sets after dropping the first sets when play reached decision and was suspended.

"It is always difficult when a season ends before the final hurdle," concluded Chapman. "Overall, we have a lot to be proud of. Corsair tennis is back."
