DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â It only took one hour and six minutes for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team to sweep Worcester State (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) Tuesday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Corsairs improve to 11-5 and have now swept four consecutive matches, while the Lancers fall to 3-14.
Freshman
Emily Pogorelec set a new career high with 27 digs with four aces. Junior
Devon Laing finished with 10 kills and seven digs, while sophomore
Chelsea Sanker had 10 kills as well. Sophomore
Kate Wade tallied seven kills and 12 digs. Freshmen
Emma Rousseau (20) and
Sabrina Bordone (16) led the match in assists.
Bordone got the match started with an ace and UMass Dartmouth jumped ahead to a quick, 9-3, advantage behind kills by Laing, Sanker and Wade. After Worcester closed its gap to 12-8, junior
Maggie Sullivan spiked a kill to start a 10-4 run to make it a 22-14 lead. Kills from Laing, Wade and an ace by Wade finished the first set.
The beginning of the second set was competitive as the Corsairs held onto a 10-8 advantage. Kills by Laing and Bordone then sparked an 8-3 run to make it an 18-11 lead. The Lancers would cut the deficit to 18-14, but an 8-1 spurt with kills by sophomores
Monika Kristjansdottir and
Gabriella Monico, Laing, and back-to-back aces from Kistjansdottir closed the set.
UMass Dartmouth scored the first six points of the third set on aces from Bordone and kills by Sanker. Worcester State made it 9-7, but that was as close as they would get. The Corsairs closed the match on a 16-6 run to take the match.
The Corsairs are at Elms on Thursday at 7 p.m.
