Corsairs Suffer 3-2 Overtime Setback to Framingham State

UMass Dartmouth outshot the Rams, 50-22

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Despite outshooting Framingham State, 50-22 and 48-19 on goal, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team fell, 3-2, in overtime Thursday night at Hetland Arena.

Scoring for the Corsairs (8-8-1, 5-5-1 MASCAC) were senior Derek Britner and 5th-year senior Kai Kapossy.

The goals for the Rams (2-13, 1-9 MASCAC) came off the sticks of junior Bryan Whelan, sophomore Ethan Cervonayco, and the game winner was sent home by freshman Dylan Marty.

Framingham State got off to a fast start when Whelan scored a close goal at the 3:01 mark of the first off assists from junior Erick Walsh and sophomore Matt Irwin. After the teams traded shots, Britner evened the score with helpers from graduate student Melker Kroon and senior Jimmy Pelton with three minutes remaining in the period.

Kapossy sent home the lone goal of the second. Junior Austin Miller and Kroon caught the Rams defense out of position and set up Kapossy for the go-ahead goal at 4:45 of the period.

UMass Dartmouth controlled the pace in the third with 14 shots. But it only took one for the Rams to tie the gme at two with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Cervonayco scored from junior Jake Garman and sophomore Luca Oliva to send the game to overtime.

The Corsairs had some good looks in OT, but a two-on-one breakaway opportunity was the difference as Marty snapped the Rams losing streak off an assist from junior Brain Kozek.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Plymouth State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
