DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â Keene State College came into the Tripp Athletic Center Wednesday night and put a stop to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's six game winning streak, handing the home team a 62-54 setback.
The Corsairs (14-6, 8-3 LEC) were led by seniors
Jordan Moretti and
Caroline Wilson, who each scored 11 points. Senior
Shaelyn Carreiro finished with nine points and nine rebounds, while 5th-year senior
Meagan Donovan tallied nine points and six boards.
Four players scored in double figures for the Owls (8-12, 5-8 LEC), led by freshman Aryanna Murray's 16 points. Freshman Kenzie Durnford tallied 15 points and seven boards, while junior Haley Derosia had 14 points and six steals.
UMass Dartmouth and Keene State traded buckets as the Corsairs took a 7-6 lead after the first four minutes. That changed when Wilson drained a three to spark an 11-3 run with two more triples from sophomore
Kaylin Zalewski and Donovan to make it an 18-9 advantage after the first quarter.
Keene State dominated the second, winning the quarter, 16-6. The Owls started the stanza with the first eight points, cutting the UMass Dartmouth lead to 18-17 with 4:19 until halftime. Moretti then sunk a three and hit a free throw to maintain a 21-17 advantage, but Keene State drained a pair of 3-balls and made a layup to take a 25-24 lead into the half.
Each side put up 20 points in the third, keeping it a one-point Keene State lead heading to the fourth. Wilson hit two threes in the quarter, while Donovan made one from long range. The Corsairs trailed 45-44Â with 10 minutes to go.
Like they did in the second, Keene State scored the first eight points of the fourth to go up 53-49 with 6:20 remaining. Carreiro then made a layup, Morretti stuck a pair at the line, and Carreiro drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 53-51 deficit with 2:07 to go. That score remained the same until the Owls got a layup to go with 49 seconds left, forcing the Corsairs to foul in the final seconds. Keene State closed the game on an 8-3 run to hand UMass Dartmouth the loss.
The Corsairs return to action at Plymouth State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
