DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â After a competitive first quarter, Wentworth broke away from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth lacrosse team to come away with a 17-4 win Saturday afternoon.
Senior Sarah Galan led the Leopards (2-3) with eight goals, while five other players scored at least one goal. Sophomore
Melanny Sanchez Alvarez led the Corsairs (1-4) with two goals. Sophomores
Hannah Mitus and
Leeyia Hoose each tallied a goal as well.
It was a defensive battle in the first quarter. Sanchez Alvarez scored first, and Mitus picked up her second goal of the year to make it a 2-0 UMass Dartmouth lead with 4:48 remaining in the first. Wentworth cut its deficit in half with 1:49 to go in the quarter.
After a long lightning delay, The Leopards came ready to play in the second, scoring five consecutive goals to take a 6-2 halftime advantage.
Sanchez Alvarez picked up her 22nd goal of the year to make it 7-3 at the 10:20 mark of the third, and Hoose notched her first of the season to make it 11-4 with 3:01 left in the quarter.
Wentworth closed the game with the final six goals to finish the final 18 minutes of the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Fitchburg State on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
