FITCHBURG, Mass. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth lacrosse team matched its season high in goals and stayed with Fitchburg State, but ended up falling on the road, 16-12, Tuesday night at Elliot Field.
Sophomore
Melanny Sanchez Alvarez led the Corsairs (1-4) with seven goals, while senior
Kara McLaughlin capitalized on each of her two shots on goal. The Falcons (3-4) had a balanced scoring attack. Senior Julia Miele was the top goal scorer with four.
Both teams battled to a 2-2 score early in the first frame. Sanchez Alvarez McLaughlin tallied for the Corsairs, while freshman Alexis Raymond and classmate Delaney Ponder notched goals for the Falcons. The Falcons finished the quarter on a 4-1 run to take a 6-3 lead.
Miele gave the Falcons an 8-4 lead with a man-up goal at the nine-minute mark of the second quarter. Junior Brooke Johnson and Miele closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals to give Fitchburg State the 11-6 advantage at intermission. Sanchez Alvarez, McLaughlin and sophomore Hannah Mitus scored in the second for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth closed the gap (12-7) when Sanchez Alvarez potted her 26th goal of the season at the 7:01 mark. The Falcons countered with Ponder's second goal of the game and Miele completed the hat trick to maintain the 14-8 lead.
The Corsairs would net two late goals from Sanchez Alvarez and sophomore Natalia Agrelo, resulting in the 16-12 final.
UMass Dartmouth is at Salem State on Monday at 6 p.m.
