BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team scored late to take down Bridgewater State in game one, 7-4, while game two ended in a 3-3 tie in eight innings due to darkness.
The Corsairs are now 10-2-1 on the year, while the Bears move to 6-5-1 this season.
GAME ONE
It took until the sixth inning for either team to score as both pitchers were rolling for the majority of the game. 5th-year senior
Jill Richards kept Bridgewater State scoreless until the sixth and started the offense herself in the same inning before senior
Lindsay Chubbuck belted her team-leading second home run to jumpstart the offense, leading the Corsairs to a 7-4 victory.
Richards worked her way out of jam with runners on second and third in the second to keep the game scoreless. Richards cruised through the next four innings, only facing 13 batters with five strikeouts.
Freshman
Kinu Takasugi reached first on an error and advanced to second on
Leah Major's base hit, Richards then singled up the middle to score Takasugi. Chubbuck followed and sent a three-run home run over the right field fence to make it a 4-0 UMass Dartmouth lead. Bridgewater State cut its deficit to 4-3 with a pair of base knocks in the bottom of the inning.
The Corsairs tacked on three more runs in the seventh. 5th-year senior
Leah Major brought home freshman
Dyonna Rodas on a sacrifice fly, Richards singled in Takasugi, and senior
Averi Soares scored on an error. The Bears scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to bring it to the final score.
GAME TWO
Sophomore pitcher
Kaitlyn Shirshac went all seven innings in the circle allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
UMass Dartmouth pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Chubbuck connected for an RBI single in the frame.
Bridgewater got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI single.
The Corsairs answered in the top of the fourth as senior Anna Kerwood raced home on the back end of a double steal to make it a 3-1 game.
The Bears made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single, and tied the game at three on a UMass Dartmouth error.
UMass Dartmouth stranded two runners on base in the top of the seventh, while the Bears had the winning run standing on third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score.
Chubbuck went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to pace the UMass Dartmouth offense in game two.
