NORTON, Mass. - Sophomore
Matt Tempone hit his second home run of the season in the ninth inning, but that was all the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team could produce in a 3-1 setback at Wheaton College Sunday afternoon.
Tempone, junior
DJ Perron, and senior
Chase Stafford each finished with two hits for the Corsairs (8-8). Senior Gavin Reily started on the mound for the Lyons (6-5) and picked up the win going six scoreless innings with six hits allowed, two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Will Haskell drove in two runs for Wheaton, while senior Jake Studley knocked home one run.
UMass Dartmouth's graduate student starting pitcher
Tylor Arruda was solid. After Studley's sacrifice fly gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the first, Arruda held the Lyons scoreless through the next four innings and only faced 13 batters in that span with two K's.
The sixth inning is when Wheaton extended its lead to 3-0. Two walks led to a double from junior Cavan Brady that drove both runners home.
Freshman
Andrew Steinhubel came into pitch and kept the Lyons off the board for the remainder of the game. Tempone went deep to lead off the ninth to halt the shutout, but a groundout and a flyout ended the game.
UMass Dartmouth resumes Little East Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at West Conn.
