Head Coach Meghan Griffin Earns First-Career Win at UMass Dartmouth

The Corsairs defeated Curry College, 12-6

MILTON, Mass. - Sophomore Melanny Sanchez Alvarez tallied seven goals, senior Bella Mancini scored three times, and junior Kim Hockhousen picked up a goal to secure a 12-6 victory over Curry Saturday morning, earning Head Coach Meghan Griffin her first-career win at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

The Corsairs (1-1) played strong on the defensive end as they limited the Colonels (0-3) to only one goal over the second and third quarters.

Curry started the game with a 2-0 lead after seniors Maggie Murray and Sabrina Santaniello picked up goals less than two minutes after the first draw control. Sanchez Alvarez evened the score with a pair of goals at the 4:43 mark of the first from Mancini and at 2:29 to make it 2-2. The Colonels took a 3-2 lead at the end of the first after a free-position score from senior Sharon Doherty.

UMass Dartmouth's defense continued to improve as the game went on, only allowing one goal in the second. Hockhousen knotted the game at three with her first goal of the season. Murray picked up the only tally of the quarter for Curry to give the home team its last advantage of the game, 4-3. Sanchez Alvarez then found the back of the net twice and Mancini got on the board off an assist from sophomore Claire Petersen to make it a 6-4 Corsair lead at the half.

It was 4-0 UMass Dartmouth in the third. An own goal got it started, Mancini scored twice, and Sanchez Alvarez one home to extend the lead to 10-4.

With the game in hand in the fourth, each team scored twice in the quarter. Sanchez Alvavrez notched both to give Coach Griffin her first win at UMass Dartmouth.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Conceicao picked up her first-career win as well, finishing with 14 saves.

The Corsairs play their home opener at 1 p.m. on Monday against Emerson on Cressy Field.
