DAVENPORT, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team and New Jersey City were knotted at five after seven innings, but a seven-run eighth propelled the Gothic Knights to a 12-6 victory over the Corsairs Wednesday in Florida.
The Corsairs are now 5-3 on the season and 3-3 during their time in Florida with three games left to play. New Jersey City improves to 3-4 and will head back North for a game next Tuesday.
Sophomore
Jared Neikam went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman
Chase Pariseau was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base, junior
DJ Perrone finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Senior
Zak Souza drove in three runs on a double.
New Jersey City scored in the top of the first. A two-out base hit and walk put a runner on second, and another base hit made it a 1-0 game. UMass Dartmouth immediately took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Freshman
Devyn Vezina led off with a single and eventually advanced to third. Perron then tripled to center to score the first run, and Neikam secured a base knock to make it a 2-1 Corsair lead.
The Gothic Knights evened the score in the third. A leadoff double followed by a groundout to move the runner to third and a base hit knotted the game at two. Back-to-back doubles by Neikam and Souza took the lead back in the bottom of the third. Pariseau then singled to right field to score Souza and make it a 4-2 advantage.
Things continued to go back-and-forth as New Jersey City quickly made it 4-4 in the fourth when a run scored on an error, and another crossed on an RBI groundout.
Sophomore
Matt Tempone led off the fifth with a base knock and later scored on a fielder's choice to make it 5-4. That would be the last time the Corsairs would lead as the Gothic Knights picked up one run in the seventh, and exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the eighth to put it out of reach. One more run crossed the plate for UMass Dartmouth in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to finish the 12-6 setback.
