Orton and Donovan Score Career Firsts in Setback to NEC

Senior Sara Orton netted her first-career goal

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth lacrosse team scored five of its six goals in the second half, but it was not enough as New England College came away with a 14-6 victory Wednesday night at Cressy Field.

Senior Sara Orton and sophomore Erin Donovan each netted their first-career goal for the Corsairs (1-9), while sophomore Mellany Sanchez Alvarez finished with two scores, and senior Kara McLaughlin found the back of the net as well. Senior Lauren Rich led the Pilgrims (6-7) with five goals.

UMass Dartmouth won the draw control battle, 14-9.

New England College started fast and took a 4-0 after 15 minutes. The Pilgrims extended their lead in the second quarter, as Rich scored twice, to help her team go up 7-0. UMass Dartmouth got on the board right before the halftime horn, as sophomore Hannah Mitus scored in the final minute.

Coming out of the half, the two teams traded the four goals in the frame. NEC struck first before McLaughlin answered to make it 8-2 NEC. Sanchez Alvarez scored as well to make it 9-3 at the end of the third.  

UMass Dartmouth came out with two straight goals in the fourth quarter, as Donovan and Orton scored for the hosts to make it 9-5. NEC tacked on two more to regain a six-goal advantage. After Sanchez Alvarez's goal at 3:15, the Pilgrims pulled away, as they scored three goals in the final two minutes for the 14-6 win.

The Corsairs travel to Southern Maine on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
