NEW LONDON, Conn. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team dropped a non-conference game on the road at Mitchell College, 6-2, Thursday afternoon.
Freshman
Devyn Vezina and junior
Andrew Bryant each finished with two hits for the Corsairs (10-12), while Sophomore
Jared Neikam and junior
DJ Perron both drove in a run. The Mariners (19-7) got a great pitching performance from freshman Chris Gibbs, who limited UMass Dartmouth to two earned on five hits with six strikeouts in the six innings. Freshman Daniel Driscoll picked up the save, throwing three shutout innings with three K's.
UMass Dartmouth jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Vezina led the game off with a double and Bryant singled to move him to third, Perron then sent a deep fly ball to center for the sacrifice fly.
Mitchell then took control, scoring one run in each of the first five innings. The Mariners tied the game in the first on an RBI groundout, went up 2-1 in the second on a double down the left field line, and made it a 3-1 game in the third with an RBI fielder's choice. Back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth extended the advantage to 4-1, and a passed ball brought the score to 5-1 in the fifth.
Bryant singled in the top of the sixth and stole second to move into scoring position. Neikam then laced one down the left field line to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Mitchell added one more run in the home half of the seventh when it took advantage of a Corsair error.
UMass Dartmouth resumes Little East Conference play on Friday with a doubleheader against Castelton at home at 12 and 3 p.m.
