SALEM, Mass. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth lacrosse team suffered a 16-4 setback at the hands of Salem State Tuesday night on the road.
Sophomore
Melanny Sanchez Alvarez scored twice and picked up an assist for the Corsairs (1-8), while junior Mackenzie Schmink led the Vikings (3-5).
The two teams traded goals in the opening minute as a score from Salem State's junior Taylor Sujko and free position shot by Sanchez Alvarez made the score 1-1. Sanchez Alvarez and sophomore Erin Donovan netted back-to-back scores for the Corsairs and the visitors exited the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.
Salem State took control in the second, scoring six unanswered goals to take a 7-3 halftime lead. Schmink and senior Suzanne Stefanik had two goals apiece in the period, which saw the Vikings outshoot UMass Dartmouth 11-0.
Salem State added five unanswered goals in the third period to go up 12-3. Sujko tallied two free position shots in the quarter before senior Sara Orton ended the streak with a goal for the Corsairs with 12 seconds remaining.
Schmink closed the game with four straight goals in the fourth quarter, scoring on all seven of her shot attempts for the game as the Vikings won, 16-4.
Sophomore Kaia Hollingsworth made four saves in the win.  Payton Conceicao (New Bedford, Mass.) stopped 10 shots for the Corsairs. Â
UMass Dartmouth is at Rhode Island College for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
